  1. Pretty good idea. It’s what made WordPress big. Personal I would like to host it myself , just as my blogs, but it’s a perfect way to bootstrap the project big time, for people how don’t like the hosting hassle and don’t mind paying for features.

    1. This blog use to self-hosted and I moved it to WordPress.com. With the custom domain feature + custom design I am paying a mere $3.58 per month. Not only that, now I don’t have to worry about backups, updates, or getting hacked. Plus I get access to all the neat WordPress.com social features. So to me I would much rather be on WordPress.com than self-host. I think a lot of people believe that if you are a pro blogger or power user you have to self-host but I don’t really feel that way. WordPress.com is a powerful tool you just need to learn how to leverage it right. Also, without WordPress.com I likely would have never met you :) .

      1. That’s the cool thing about WordPress, you can move it very easily from self hosted to WordPress.com and vica versa. I prefer self hosted cause of the total flexibility in customization. It’s also very cheap I have a good hosting solution, which cost € 0,50 per month. I can install up to 25 domain’s and unlimited subdomains. I now run about 12 different blogs, still 50 cents per month. Backup for all blogs is a task which takes three clicks.

By the way, a WordPress.com blog can also be compromised if a hacker snoops your login info. In that aspect there’s no difference between WordPress.com en self hosted.

How about getting back your WordPress.com site if it is cleaned out by a hacker??

          1. Exactly my point! And by having central hosted and self hosted. It’s really strong and attractive ecosystem.

      1. No to spek of PHP BB, which imho is in any case an accident waiting to happen ;-P

Hosted solution is a very good idea, even if it’s just a springboard to your own installation.
